A beautiful model
In the 1950s cars were still ridiculously beautiful and they got the longest possible names: Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione by Scaglietti. You would like to have this Ferrari, if only because it seems like they are 6 cars.
Cabriolets or spiders are usually the slightly less brutal version of the closed car. Driving without a roof is a bit vulgar. But sixty years ago, the rules were totally different: open top cars were masculine race monsters. Take this Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione that was built by Scaglietti. This seems like a tour-mobile for boulevards, where you can wave at passers-by from your comfort seats.
Error: this is a stage finisher during the 24 hours of Le Mans. In its year of birth 1959 this Scaglietti rode to fifth place overall and a third place in its class during the monstrous war of attrition on the Circuit de la Sarthe. The section Competitizione in the lengthy name is obviously already a clue. Up front is a Tipo 128F race engine with three carburetors, special camshafts and a special fuel tank in race trim with external fuel filter. The V12 delivered for that time an incredible 266 hp. The car was ready on 15 June 1959 in Maranello and was then taken to Le Mans with screeching bloodlines: for the race was already on the 20th.
Eventually the car won various races in the US and on the Bahamas. In 2011 the 250 GT Spider was fully restored to its original Le Mans state by Ferrari Classiche. That this Ferrari was a participant at Le Mans before, made it welcome on Le Mans Classic, but there were many more events where you can participate with the Scaglietti. Unfortunately, there is a hefty entrance fee to that lol: RM Sotheby's expects the proceeds to be between $14- and $17 million (€12 to €15 million).
