I am offering for auction a stunning and large 19th century oil on canvas of the sailing vessel The Great Republic, the largest clipper ship ever built. Inscribed verso. A beautiful original and authentic ship portrait.

Condition. In fairly good condition. Please view all images for condition. Ready to hang. A few flakes missing mid left. A true attic find. The painting was covered in dirt and grime. The last photo shows part of the painting which was yet to be cleaned. Later frame.

The Great Republic was launched Oct 4th 1853. 4445 tons. On March 5th 1872 the ship got into a heavy gale close to the Bermudas on passage from Rio de Janeiro to St. John (NB). After the pumps could not get rid of the water leakage, the ship was abandoned in sinking condition.

Please note. Frames and glass are delicate and can occassionally take a knock in the post. I wrap paintings very well but you bid on this lot with the understanding that you accept this small risk when bidding.
