2nd half 20th century - Vintage - used with visible signs of wear
|Object:||Belly mask, feminine|
|Ethnic group/ culture:||Ibo|
|Period:||2nd half 20th century|
|Condition:||Vintage - used with visible signs of wear|
|Sold with stand:||No|
This type of mask was, and sometimes still is, worn in front of the stomach of the dancers during fertility rituals. This use can be found in many areas in Africa, including the Yoruba, Ibo and Makonde.
The mask had to represent the stomach and the breasts of a pregnant woman. The pregnant woman is important, it represents an enrichment of the group. For this reason, she may participate in decisions for the community, which otherwise is only reserved for men.
Condition: with traces of use, crusty patina. Please see the photos for details.
Like almost all belly masks for sale, this mask is also offered without the corresponding face mask. But also please pay attention to the male belly mask that I offer in the auction too. It has most probably been carved by the same person.
