Holy Mary of Lourdes music box "La Grotte" - Silverplate - France - 1900-1949
On 11 February 1858 Bernadette Soubirous saw the first apparition of ‘a lady’, as she called it. The girl was the 14-year-old daughter of an unemployed miller. She was poor and so slow of mind that she could not even learn the answers of the Catechism by heart. On 25 February, the Lady instructed the girl to go to the well in the rock that was nearby, drink from the water and wash herself in it. The Lady also said a chapel had to be erected in her name so people could go there on a pilgrimage.
Wind-up mechanism: Cuendet, Switzerland.
Material: silver-plated music box, in working condition.
Condition: good with minor signs of old age.
