Engraving on copper in folio, on textured paper. 1722.
Beautiful example of one of the most representative Greek statues of the martial art of PANKRATION, violent precursor of modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Please note the representation, the children are taught how to fight by the strict teacher, armed with a stick.
Bernard de Montfaucon, a French Benedictine monk, was the initiator of palaeography (he was the first to use this term) and made a huge contribution to the birth of archaeology.
