The images and objects by Alois Lichtsteiner - whether it is birches, vessels or mountain images - they are neither figurative or abstract. What we see is concrete. It is always what it is and what it means at the same time, so brush strokes / colour on the body of a picture, for example snow on mountain slopes and places where it has melted.
Alois Lichtsteiner does not depict mountains, birches or vessels. He only means the painting itself, a skin-covered body, an body that is covered with skin colour. The sensual perception of the world through the skin is what makes Lichtsteiner the subject of his paintings. He only changes the point of view, to examine the same thing again from a different angle. It concerns the basic questions of painting.
The different work cycles „Der Inhalt der Gefässe“, „Birke“, or „Berg“ have their subjects questions whilst they are being dealt with. The image does not pretend to be something other than a body, covered with a layer of skin as a colour. In the reduced combination of grey and white forms, the monumental diversity of the high mountains can be represented without presenting the mountain images. You directly experience the emptiness and silence, you can feel the cold or the reflected light on the surface, it is captured by this feeling of abandonment.
