Salvo (Salvatore Mangione) - Salvo.21 Januar bis 6 März 1977 - 1977

Salvo, actually Salvatore Mangione (May 22, 1947 in Leonforte on Sicily, Italy † September 12, 2015 in Turin) was an Italian painter, photographer and conceptual artist and representative of the Italian Arte Povera. Salvatore Mangione was born in Sicily in 1947, but moved to Turin in 1956, where he lived until his death. Salvo began painting in the early 1960s. In 1970 he had his first solo exhibition at the Galleria Gian Enzo Sperone in Turin: His exhibited works were photomontages, with pictures from newspapers and notes as transcriptions of childish handwriting and texts from the history of literature. At the same time, from 1970 to 1972, he began to create a series of marble tablets containing only single words or phrases such as: "Idiot," "I'm the Best," or "Unless you live," or parts of ancient texts labeled with names or lists of artists and celebrities of the past like a signature. Salvo's works were ironic and provocative, exploring the meaning of the works of art, language and visual perception before the statement that art always has a relationship to the past. In 1972 he was a participant of Documenta 5 in Kassel in the section Individual Mythologies. In 1973, with few exceptions, a "return" to the traditional painting on the canvas with the brush. His painting stylized, he used modern, vivid colors and stereotypical characters. Typical for his pictures are deserted landscapes and architectures, which are flooded by a strange, powerful light. In 1975, he began with works of a mixture of concept art and painting; he copied the names of artists and writers of the past and combined them with colorful embroidery against a backdrop of abstract shapes symbolizing the region or state the artist came from. In the following years, he took his themes of mythology and archeology: Ruins as a sign of the past, past civilizations and landscapes. These topics occupy him until the very end.
