MARTINEZ CUBELLS, Enrique – Madrid, 1874 – Málaga 1947-
He started his artistic training in the Escuela de Arte y Oficios of Madrid, and he continued them at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. He was a teacher at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios of Madrid, and in the Escuela de Bellas Artes of San Fernando, where he had been a student. He was a painter of marine-art and urban subject-matters, interiors and rural atmospheres. He was endowed with advanced technique and aesthetics in order to interpret realism. Martínez Cubells remained overshadowed and undervalued in spite of his early success as a painter “due to his topic typecasting as a Sorollista”. He drew brave brushstrokes, very synthetic, within naturalistic trends, and with a great interest for the lighting effects “more nordic and austere than Sorolla”.
