Shiro Kasamatsu (Tokyo, 11 january 1898) entered the painting school of Kaburagi Kiyokata at age 13. Kasamatsu was very talented and from a young age, his paintings were on exhibition.
In the early 1950s Kasamatsu changed his publisher to Unsodo, Kyoto. Until 1960 he created 102 known prints for Unsodo. They were created by Unsodo carvers and printers in Shin-hanga style and show traditional subjects. Kasamatsu shows great mastership in night, rain and snow scenes.
The cut-out in the bottom right corner ("Kento Cut") was made in the printing process.
