The first news of the origin of the company, then called Phayre & Bradley, date from the year 1588, although the company took its current name in 1736, with the arrival at the winery of John Croft, member of an illustrious family of wine merchants in Yorkshire, England.
John Croft was one of the most prominent figures in the wine business in Porto in the 18th century. In the year 1788 Croft wrote a treatise on the Wines of Portugal which is still one of the most important sources of information about the origins of Port wine. Both Croft and his family played a prominent and influential role in the Oporto wine trade. The success of the wines of its wineries is due, in large part, to the Quinta da Roêda, one of the best wine properties on the Douro River.
But the Croft never forgot their origins, and the family returned to England in the 19th century, after the War of Independence. Today the Croft winery is owned by the descendants of two former families of the Oporto wine industry, the Fladgate and the Yeatman.
