Original woodblock print by Kasamatsu Shiro (1898-1991) - 'Yuki no matsushima' 雪の松島 (Snow at Matsushima) - Published by Unsodo - Heisei period (1989-present)
Shiro studied art at Kaburagi Kiyokata. He created his first woodblock print designs for Watanabe Shozaburo in 1919. Shiro designed shin-hanga prints for Watanabe for a long period, and gained fame with his romantic landscapes and depictions of the traditional Japanese life. Between 1952 and 1960 he also created over 100 woodblock print designs for the Kyoto publisher Unsodo. Shiro is generally regarded as one of the top-notch shin-hanga woodblock print artists in Japan.
Comments - charming winter scene of the Godaido Temple on one of the islands in Matsushima, a group of hundreds of small islands, all covered in pine trees. The temple, the surrounding pine trees and the boats on the foreground are all covered in a thick layer of snow. The air is full of pink light, the clouds are lit orange whilst the sun goes down. Multiple islands on the horizon. An intriguing design with fine bokashi shading.
There is a small notch at the bottom right corner (outside of the woodblock print). This is the so-called "Kento", and is characteristic for the publisher Unsodo when found in this spot. Kento is the registration system that is traditionally used by Japanese makers of woodblock prints to ensure that the different colours are well aligned (each colour is applied separately using a separate woodblock).
Signed - Shiro, on the left bottom of the print
Published - Unsodo, publisher's seal in the left margin.
First edition in 1954. This is a later edition, printed with the original woodblocks.
