Zoo Artis (The Netherlands) always strived to be an inspirational source for artists, and found the interaction between nature and art important. Thanks to August Allebé (1838-1927)many students of the Rijksakademie of visual arts visited Artis. Several artiste had access to the storage areas in the zoo or were given a studio, for example Jan van Essen (1854-1936) and Jaap Kaas (1898-1972). Furthermore, several exhibitions were held with the animal as its subject. This work is very likely made by one of the artists whom established themselves in Artis.
