The monkeys are made of wood and are mounted on a wooden platform with 4 legs.

Zoo Artis (The Netherlands) always strived to be an inspirational source for artists, and found the interaction between nature and art important. Thanks to August Allebé (1838-1927)many students of the Rijksakademie of visual arts visited Artis. Several artiste had access to the storage areas in the zoo or were given a studio, for example Jan van Essen (1854-1936) and Jaap Kaas (1898-1972). Furthermore, several exhibitions were held with the animal as its subject.
This work is very likely made by one of the artists whom established themselves in Artis. The craftsmanship can be clearly seen from the of this art work.
