KiKa stands for Children cancer free. In the Netherlands, there are hundreds of children diagnosed with cancer every year, one in four children doesn't survive. KiKa believes that this should improve and can improve. Kika raises funds for innovative research and other activities in the field of children's cancer, focused on less pain during treatments, more healing, and a higher quality of life at a later stage.
For this initiative of KiKa no less than fifty photographers visited children with cancer or children who have had cancer. Their special meeting has led to an exquisite collection of unique photos which can be obtained exclusively at Catawiki from 3 to 24 April, where the full proceeds including 9% buyer commission will be donated to KiKa and the Prinses Máxima Centre in Utrecht.
When cancer treatment stops, for many people a new chapter in their lives begins. This new chapter can be associated with hope and fun, but can, partly because of late effects of treatment, also bring anxiety and worry.
In the first picture we have tried to portray the hopeless situation I often found myself in the last years. I was fighting with myself and the world. Angry and disappointed because I noticed that I was so different than my peers.
In the second picture a strong woman, I hope to become like her. This woman is no longer held back by the obstacles brought by her past.
In both pictures, a central place for the KiKa bear. The Kika bear has been a symbol for hope to me in all phases of my life.
