A rare Polyphon 5.3/4 inch disc operated music box with duplex comb, 24 records.
This is the larger 15.3/4 inch model. It has a double comb, making for a very warm, deep and pleasant sound. Models with a single comb or with a double comb and bells also exist.
The box was made around 1895-1900 in Leipzig, Germany by Polyphon Musikwerke AG. There were three companies at the time producing these. Symphonion and Polyphon operated and mainly sold their products in Europe, in America the market was dominated by Regina, who were based in New Jersey.
The machine came built into a range of boxes. This size (15.3/4 inch) was produced as a simple, hardly decorated box, or this model, a more luxurious and decorated box. They also come with a cabinet underneath for storing records, this one does not include a cabinet.
This model was originally sold to a manufacturing company in Djokja in the Dutch Indies (nowadays Yogyakarta, Indonesia) called "A. Resink & Co", of which still carries a copper plate, which is a sign of a beautiful provenance.
The machine is in excellent condition. It has two minor flaws, the inlaid wood on the top has some tiny bits missing and the little knob on the side to pause playing doesn't always work straight away. The mechanics work flawlessly otherwise and the comb, which produces the sound, is in perfect shape.
The plates are in good to mediocre condition. All have wear on the paint, which occurs naturally from playing the record. With some, the name and record number is hardly legible. Some have small pieces from the side missing. However, all are playable.
