Naar Jan Toorop (1858-1928) - Annietje mijn kleindochtertje
Jan Toorop (1858-1928) was, together with Van Gogh and Mondriaan, considered one of the most important Dutch artists of the period around the 1900s. They focussed themselves on the newest, international developments in arts and new how to inspire other artists. For example, Toorop was a great source of inspiration to Gustav Klimt.
The work of Toorop is loved by a large audience and is often associated with art nouveau, especially because of its well-known lithograph to promote Delft salad oil. This lithograph was so well known that even art nouveau in our country also called salad oil style is called. That his oeuvre includes many more styles,is less well known. He also worked neo-impressionistic and symbolist and was one of the innovative forces in the painting. He seemed to constantly alternate those styles, but recent research has shown that there is a clear line in its development. He responded to his surroundings and adjusted existing work on a regularly basis. He was a very forward-thinking artist.
