Scarab carving Libyan Desert Glass
Libyan Desert Glass (LDG) was created 28 million ago, when a big meteorite hit the sandstone formation at the great sand see in the Sahara.
By hitting the ground the kinetic energy was set free in a huge explosion that vaporised the meteorite and the surrounding earth surface. The heat melted the Sandstone that is now found as impact glass. LDG has been used for making tools already in the early stone age. In the Neolithic times fine blades and scrapers have been made. The most famous piece of jewellery made from LDG is the scarab in the pectoral from pharaoh Tutankhamen.
This simplyfied abstract carving is based on the style of the old Egyptian scarabs.
