The deep red glaze on this porcelain vase is derived from copper, a metal which is notoriously difficult to regulate in the heat of an oven. The distinctive 'ox blood' colour occurs when copper loses its oxygen during the firing process (in a smoky oven with reduced oxygen levels), after which it is re-oxidised during cooling. The resulting glaze, which can vary in colour and coverage, is one of the most distinctive and elusive of all high temperature ceramics.
