Bruno Contenotte, aka Bruno Facchini (San Giorgio di Mantova, 29th April 1922 - Milan, 14th April 1992) is the artist who has most combined art and science in an artistic journey that goes from the use of fluids in painting to quantum metaphysics. Versatile and eclectic, expert in the use of materials, light and many other technological applications to art, he was able to tell a new universe where nothing is ever identical to itself.
Bruno Facchini, this is his real name, was born on 29th April 1922 in San Giorgio di Mantova, a small town near Mantua described as ‘three houses and a farm’ by the artist himself.
His family members have noble origins but have long worked as farmers and they hope that he too will join them in the family farming business.
But Bruno wants to become a mechanic because he is ‘fascinated by overalls’, and at the age of 14 he decides to leave for Milan where he starts working in a mechanical company. In the meantime he continued his studies first at the Cardinal Ferrari schools, then at the Feltrinelli Institute where he graduated as an industrial expert, working during the war in a company that produced watches and equipment for the Navy and Air Force.
In the meantime he studied astronomy, philosophy, physics, chemistry and electronics, but his talent for machines is obvious, and he began to invent and register many patents (including the first on-call anti-theft device).
He started to feel the lure of art, and he attended the Accademia di Brera, deciding in 1952 to fully devote himself to it with what he calls ‘technical things’, ‘unusual machines and various gizmos’.
Meanwhile he cultivated his passion for judo, opening the first judoka school in Milan, the Jigora Kano, in 1956.
It was 1956, in fact, the crucial year of his debut in the world of art when, during the Mostra del Blu at the Apollinaire Gallery, he met the art dealer Guido Le Noci, the French art critic Pierre Restany, and Ives Klein, with whom he shared his passion for judo. Both masters of martial art, the two began a fruitful dialogue with Klein who shows him an artistic alternative in full Spatialism.
Le Noci and Restany will remain his mentors and patrons throughout his career: Le Noci also coined his stage name Contenotte, inspired by his works and his noble origins.
His cosmovisions, the use of fluids and lights immediately fascinate the artistic scene, but his creativity is constantly growing, in a new dialogue with material.
Creator of psychedelic lights, metaphorical space projections, translumen, translumination of cathedrals, museums and squares, Tao tiles, luminoscope, metamultiplex, transmecart, Mobilcubo, Ultraoro jewels, sensitization to deep heat and Tripaxis, among other works he signed the final of Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece ‘2001. A Space Odyssey’.
He died on 14th April 1992 at the Policlinico in Milan, where he was hospitalised for a surgery, 69 years old.
