Christ on the cross (2) - ivory and wood - Late 18th century
Ivory “living” Christ suffering with the head tilted to the left, from a French area, with wooden cross and coeval frame. At the foot of the cross there are the large Adam’s skull and crossed femurs made of ivory.
The sculpture shows well-defined muscles; the separate feet and the head with a crown of thorns were masterly carved; the long hair glide down to the shoulders.
Please note the sculpture of Adam’s skull, which is masterfully made in unusual dimensions.
