The medal was designed by Joan Miró, compatriot and friend of Picasso, then honorary president of the International Association of Plastic Arts, who donated the original drawing to UNESCO. The obverse bears the inscription Pablo Picasso - Malaga - 25.X.1881 and has been described by Miró as follows: "in the centre, is an eye, lively and deep like that of Picasso, surrounded by magical and musical inscriptions ". On the reverse is a landscape composed of a desert field, a tree and a star with Miro's signature underneath. UNESCO awards this medal to individuals or groups in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the arts and culture.
