This 19th century enamelled vase was made is Isfahan, Persia (Iran). The Cuerda Seca enamel that is used is done as follows: The design is stamped or carved into the surface, after which coloured glazing is applied. The contours of the design are detailed with a mixture of bees wax or plant-based fat and manganese oxide. The wax or fat burns during the cooking, which creates red of black contours which also prevent the coloured glazing from touching each other. This technique was thought of in the Seljuq (14th–15th century) period in.
