Josef Breitenbach (1896-1984) is an important German-American photographer from the 1930s to 1960s.
Since he was involved in the ‘Münchener Räterebublik’ in 1918/19, when he was 22 years old, and being of Jewish descent, he had to leave Germany head over heels in 1933. He spent several years in France, before going into exile in the United States.
In Germany, Breitenbach was a portrait photographer. He also made wonderful nude photographs of young women he was friends with. In Paris, he earned his living by making portrait photographs of writers and artists. During this period, he started experimenting and working on his avantgarde oeuvre, which he continued in the US.
Both Breitenbach and his Japanese wife were members of a nudist club in New Jersey. He took many wonderfully natural nude photographs there, some of which are included in this book.
The book was published in one single edition of 600 copies.
