A Kabyle (Berber) Figure - Earthenware - From the northeast of Algeria - Late 19th century
A Kabyle (Berber) figure of Mother and Baby, this type is very rare.
The inhabitants of the mountainous Kabyle area along the Mediterranean coast in the northeast of Algeria are mostly farmers. They're also excellent artists, known for their jewellery, textiles, mats, baskets, earthenware and wall paintings. Wheel-thrown earthenware, made by men, dates from the 7th century BCE when the Phoenicians introduced the pottery wheel in the Algerian coastal area. Handmade earthenware, made by women, is an older, probably local tradition dating back to 2000 year BCE.
