Pipe - Sea foam, sculpted sepiolite early 1900 - subject: Leda and the swan
Nice meerschaum pipe (sepiolite), that is hydrous magnesium silicate, carved by a German craftsman in the early 1900.
The sculpture subject is Leda and the swan: in Greek mythology, Leda was Thestius’s daughter and married Tyndareus, king of Sparta.
The legend says that Zeus fell in love with her and turned into a swan to mate with her. This myth has inspired several painters, including Michelangelo Buonarroti.
The pipe is used and shows signs of its age. It was broken and then glued at the base of Leda’s feet (see pictures). The pipe is solid and very nice to the eye. It has a silver band (no brands) and a mouthpiece in amber or bakelite.
Original shaped box.
