Very decorative and high quality miniature cast bronze cannon from South East Asia dating from the late 18th century. Most likely made by Dutch or Portuguese traders, it is in the traditional Lantaka fashion with flared muzzle, post and notch sights and designed as a swivel gun. These were fixed to vessels travelling the waters of the Asian archipelagos and villagers considered any vessel not fitted with cannons ill-equipped due to the prevalence of pirates. These cannons were often passed down the generations, the miniature versions also being used for ceremonial purposes such as signalling an important event such as a birth as well as for militant use up to the early 20th century. During the Japanese occupation in WW2 many families buried their Lantakas to prevent them from being confiscated and melted down.
From a private Australian collection.

Measures 21cm in length, weighs 1.5 kilos and has an approx 1.5 cm diameter clear bore.

Mounted on a later hardwood stand for display.
