Waldemar Otto was born in 1929 in Poland and fled in 1945 with his parents to Halle in Germany. In 1948, Otto began a sculpture study at the University of the Arts in Berlin. In 1952, he graduated as Meisterschüler with Alexander Gonda. His first success came in 1957 with the price of the Großen Berliner Kunstausstellung. From 1961 onwards his first torsos, which have since become characteristic of his style. In 1973, he was appointed professor at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen. From 1976 he lives and works in the artist colony Worpswede in the state of Lower Saxony.
