1925 Castillo Ygay Reserva Especial, Bodegas Marqués de Murrieta - Rioja Gran Reserva - 1 Bottle (0.75L)

This is one of the first bottles placed on the market by Marqués de Murrieta winery in 1973. Stored in private cellar up to today. 49% Tempranillo, 19% Garnacha, 17% Mazuelo, 15% Graciano. This was aged for 8 months in 18.500-litre tank. Transferred to fairly new American oak barrels, where it stayed for five years. The wine was then moved into older barrels, neutralised by tartaric acid deposits on the inside, and aged for an astonishing 32 years more, before being bottled in 1964 Even at this stage the wine was not considered ready, and was given considerable bottle age before finally coming onto the market in 1973. Its longevity is partly explained by its high acidity and a pH of 2.96, a figure more commonly associated with a racy white wine. 99/100 Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider): "This nose was off charts! Served double blind, I was willing to bet it was a 1947 Right Bank Bordeaux, due to its insane, jammy, liqueur, VA, earth, floral, liquorice, truffle, brown sugar, ripe, riper and overripe berry, plum, fig and raisin profile. It was definitely one of the most unique wines I’ve ever nosed and tasted. On the palate, the wine was erotic, sexy and decadent in all the right ways, finishing with sensuous, pure, cherry liqueur flavours". 97/100 Jamie Goode (Wineanorak.com): "It's slightly cloudy and a deep brown/red colour. Savoury earthy nose. Fresh, lemony edge to the palate with warm, savoury, slightly balsamic characters and bit of fruit, still. Lovely balance despite the age with complex, concentrated flavours. Still very much alive and quite delicious. It's nice not to have to make excuses for such an old wine". 97/100 Vinosclasicos: "Pure energy and an absolute balance. A caress at the entrance and an extraordinary vigour, vibrant, with flashing tannins, still with teeth despite age. It has so much acidity that I would like any red today. A wine in top form that for being who is discarded that has been refreshed with subsequent harvests. Of a youth and freshness that we could not suspect. A little to complete 10 years of the centenary seems to have a lot of rope ahead". 100/100 Cellartracker: "A wine of unfathomable majesty and depth. With its vigorous, almost youthful acidity and yet mature complexity and sheer deliciousness, it outshone the previous Grand Crus of Bordeaux, Cheval Blanc, Mouton, Petrus (hopefully) and has become the wine I can mention as "The Best" I've had. Mystic and Divine". 98/100 Cellartracker: "Stunning. Deliousiously resolved, sweet dark fruit and still showing youthful characteristics. Resolved, clean, soft, but round mouthfeel. Deep and layered. Sappy. Delicious - should still be great at age 100+". Roger Bohmrich (Master of Wine): "Ruby to the eye - almost no evolution! Multidimensional bouquet displaying old oak, cedar, nuts and very subtle red fruit. Avery fine, almost ethereal fragrance. Silky and fresh quality on attack. Lightening somewhat, yet superb, complex flavours last in the aftertaste. This wine has exceptional elegance, delicacy and balance. Stunning Ygay at its best". * Shipment made with special wine box certified by UPS and DHL.
