Claerhout was born in 1939, in Pittem. She made statues in terracotta, bronze, and porcelain. Her work is highly evocative and narrative, and is sometimes described as 'folk', although she also excelled in 'serious' work.
The importance of her work is difficult to overestimate and is known in the Netherlands and abroad.
In Antwerp, for example, you will find her work in the subway stations Opera and Van Eeden, the Hotel School PIVA, the ACV-building etc.
To the European Parliament in Brussels the official statue of Europe can be found and to the Basilica of Koekelberg a majestic Damiaan image in its full glory.
In recent years she concentrated on making sculptures in porcelain. with which she received much admiration in, amont others, the European Parliament.
May remained ambitious until her death.
