Blok der Velden studied at the Rotterdam Academy. In 1934 he visited Texel for the first time. As a nature lover, he was attracted to the island. After a period of two years in the French city of Nice, he returned to the Netherlands and settled on the island with his wife Ietje in August 1940. In the last year of the war, he was forced, together with a hundred other Texel people, to work on the construction of German defences around the Drenthe capital Assen. During this period he made a large number of drawings. The Texel landscape was also frequently captured.

Blok van der Velden was a hard worker and he produced hundreds of watercolours, etchings, paintings and drawings. He was particularly attracted to the Texel landscape before large-scale land consolidation had taken place. As a result of this large-scale land consolidation, he felt less related to the island and fled to Terschelling for a few summers. From 1971 he also stayed more often in France and later in Italy. In 1979 he definitively left Texel and moved to Italy. There he died a year later and was initially buried as well. In 1995 a reburial took place and he came to lie next to his second wife Hanneke Breur at the General Cemetery in Den Burg.
