Van der Willigen was a daughter of Adriaan van der Willigen Pzn. (1810-1876) and Geertruida Aletta van Voorthuijsen. Her father was a doctor, author and art collector. In her place of birth, she was taught by the painters Ferdinand Oldewelt and Pieter Frederik van Os. From 1897 on, she was a member of Arti et Amicitiae. From 1898 until 1904, she lived in Volendam.
In 1904, she went to Brussels, where she worked and studied in the studio of Ernest Blanc-Garin. The next year, she studied at the Antwerp drawing academy for several months. In 1906, Van der Willigen settled in Laren, where she participated in the artist community and took lessen with Hendrik Maarten Krabbé. She made several trips to, among other destinations, Belgium, France, Germany and Italy. She watercoloured and was mostly known as painter of flower still lifes, but also did landscapes and village views inspired by her travels.
Top right is slightly uneven, but not intrusive.
