Rare Eyema O Byeri Northern – Ntumu – Cameroun.
In fairly good state for its considerable age. Feet damaged as found. It dates to the 1910 – 1920 period. On stand.
Provenance: Ex- collection of Max Willborg, London. Bought from him around 1975 by P. Westerdijk.
The northern Ntumu live in southern Cameroun, close to the border with Gabon. They have produced a specific style of Byeri figures that are clearly influenced by those of the Ngumba and Mabea, especially so in their size and proportions. What strikes us most is the elongated shapes of legs, arms and torsos. The figure here is rather flat, even the head. The sculpture lacks the swing of other Fang styles and works rather rigid. It is clearly an archaic style of great antiquity. Very much unlike other Byeri figurers, this example has what looks like a bundle of fetish material fixed with rottan bindings around the middle, covering the hands as well. A thin pin comes down from the buttocks so as to let it sink into a nsekh or barkbox that is now missing. The neck is transfixed as if to make it possible to carry or bind the piece. Under the pectorals, a square cavity is hollowed out. These various traits help to give the item an antique and ancient look.
