C. 1550 - 1070 BC.
A wooden funerary figure with horizontal panel of hieroglyphs.
Provenance: Ex. Julian Bird collection. Acquired from Luxmore Newcombe collection. Purchased from Flinders Petrie. Part of the famous Egyptologist collection. Supplied with paperwork from dealer (ADA member).
William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) was an English archaeologist
He went to Egypt for the first time in 1880 to measure the Great Pyramid of Giza. In London, he got in touch with wealthy Amelia Edwards, who had co-founded the Egypt Exploration Fund earlier. Petrie did his first real digs in Egypt for this organization in 1884. He continued to work intermittently in Egypt until 1904, when he founded its own support organization, the British School of Archeology in Egypt. He would continue digging in Egypt until 1926, with a time out in the First World War. He then encountered problems with the changed relations in Egypt, which at the time had gained greater independence from the British, and he decided to transfer his activities to the Palestine area under British mandate. There, he finished his long career, having finally settled in Jerusalem, where he died in 1942.
