Louis-Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne was the son of the Duke of Bouillon and governor of Auvergne, Godefroy-Maurice de La Tour d'Auvergne, and Marie-Anne Mancini, Mazarin's niece. He is also a great-nephew of the Marshal of Turenne.
His military career began in 1691, when he was trained in the king's regiment. In 1698, he became colonel of the Blaisois regiment, and gradually evolved in the hierarchy. Brigadier four years later, he was finally promoted to the rank of camp marshal in 1704. In 1707, he married the daughter of a wealthy banker from the Paris financial centre, Marie-Anne Crozat (1696-1729), who brought a considerable dowry of 2 million Tours pounds (livres tournois). The following year he was made lieutenant general of the king's armies.
