BELGA was launched in 1923 by tobacco dealers Alphonse and François Vander Elst. The brothers wanted to launch a brand that would make the Belgians proud, after the first world war. The name of the brand comes from the monetary unit, the belga, which was exactly the price of a pack of cigarettes.
