Good

Country of manufacture: France
Weapon Type: Bayonet (More lots)
Sub-type: mle 1886 lebel// de Rosalie
Condition: Good
Overall Length: 640 mm
Barrel/ blade length: 514 mm

Very nice piece bayonet itself in top condition. The tip is missing from the sheath. This is the first type of this this kind of bayonet. The Mle 1886 Lebel is also known as the Rosalie (named after the wound that had the shape of a rose (flower) after the bayonet was pulled out of the body), La Fourchett (French for fork) and as Le Cure-dents (French for toothpick). It was a needle bayonet (514 mm long), designed for the Lebel bolt action rifle and carbine. While most other bayonets from that time had a wooden handle, the first models were fitted with a handle moulded from alpaca and a crossguard. To prevent the loosening of the bayonet during firing, a clamp was provided in 1893 between the handle of the grip and the bayonet holder. These bayonets were referred to as Mle 1886-93 Lebel.
From around September 1914 one would switch to a bronze handle to reduce production costs. From 1915, the crossguard was no longer applied (Mle 1886-15 Lebel). In 1917, eventually one switched to cast iron handles (Mle 1886-15 Lebel).
The 392 mm long blade was a cylindrical rod in which four grooves were machined. The bayonet was reasonably fragile and could therefore easily break off. Broken specimens were often re-sharpened and then used as a trench dagger (so they had different lengths); From 1935, they were officially introduced as the Mle 1886-93 R 35 Lebel Dagger with a fixed, unknown length.
