Painter from Modena, Oscar Sorgato (Modena, 1902 – Milan, 1941), his short career took place almost entirely in the vibrant artistic Milanese scene in the 1930s
between the suggestions of the Novecento Italiano movement and the echoes of Chiarismo.

Oscar Sorgato’s human and artistic story took place over a short period of time and fits into the pages of a delicate period for the history of Italy, but an extremely lively period from an artistic and cultural point of view. The exhibition will cover the period of studies between Modena, Rome and Pavia in the twenties to continue the transition to Milan in the thirties, when the artist will be thrown into a vibrant and dynamic scene, animated by a choir of talented protagonists, but without resigning to his role as a simple supporting actor. In this case, the artist will demonstrate an unexpected integration ability in that delicate transition that, in the Lombard capital, showed in order: the dissolution of the original core of Novecento but the activism of its most illustrious members on the scene, the arrival of Les Italiens de Paris but above all a general atmosphere of substantial pictorial awakening thanks to the affirmation of Chiarismo, the anti-Novecento group, a non-programmatic and heterogeneous movement and, at the end of the decade, through the gradual establishment of a tendency towards lyrical expressionism that would later merge into the Corrente movement in the 1940s, thanks to the talent of artists such as Sassu, Birolli and Mucchi.

Sorgato’s production focuses on two fundamental themes, landscape painting and portraiture, giving us a social overview for the second, thus framing the ambitions and concerns of the Milanese petite bourgeoisie, with the female figures playing a leading role.
