Ethnic group/ culture: GREBO
Region/ country: COTE D'IVOIRE / LIBERIA
Material: Wood
Condition: Good condition, used with some signs of wear
Sold with stand: No
Dimensions: 22×16×65 cm
Weight: 1913 g

This type of mask, created by the Grebo, represented the spirits of the invisible world residing in the forest. They are very rare in the collections of European museums. These masks are related to the masks of the Bété. However, their iconography and size are very different, Grébo masks could measure up to one metre. Carrying two to ten tubular eyes framing a long, fine nose, they strongly inspired Picasso's Cubist work in the early 20th century.

Male masks with geometric shapes are often recognizable by their long nose framed by one, two or more pairs of protruding eyes of tubular shape, sometimes threatening in appearance. The features of the women's masks are softer, more harmonious and more serene.

This mask belonged to Bob Gazel, a great collector of African art and former advisor to the Finance Minister of Ivory Coast, Togo and Burkina Faso. His collection is one of the largest in the world and has more than 2500 objects of African art from different countries and ethnic groups. Collection date 1967 with presumed much older seniority.
