Der jüdische Künstler Paul Gangolf, eigentlich Paul Loewy, war Autodidakt und schuf neben Gemälden vor allem grafische Arbeiten. Ab 1914 entstanden erste expressionistische Holzschnitte, in denen Gangolf unter anderem seine Erlebnisse als Soldat im Ersten Weltkrieg verarbeitete. Zu Beginn der 1920er Jahre veröffentlichte er mehrere Mappenwerke. Neben der 1923 entstandenen Mappe ›Großstadt‹ gehört die im Malikverlag erschienene Serie ›Metropolis‹ zu seinen wichtigsten Werken. Gangolf wurde von Gustav Schiefler gefördert, dieser plante ein Werkverzeichnis der Druckgraphiken Ganglofs zu erstellen. Durch den Tod Schieflers konnte dieses Projekt jedoch nicht umgesetzt werden.
