Q. Horatii Flacci emblemata
first published in 1607. This is from the 1612 edition with multilingual verses on the backside. In deviation of later editions, this one has no text on the front of the page.
The co-work between Vaenius and the engravers have been studied. The Q. Horatii Flacci emblemata was a joined effort of printers, learned commentators on Horace, engravers and Vaenius himself.
Otto Vaenius (1556-1629)
Painter and humanist from Leiden fled to southern Netherlands in 1572 because of the political. Studied a few years under Dominicus Lampsonius, then left for Italy. After his return he settled in Antwerp. Vaenius tried to maintain favour with the Court. Until the return of his pupil Rubens from Italy, he was the leading painter in Antwerp.
He worked for Rudolf II in Prague, was court painter of Alexander Farnese and Albrecht and Isabella. He was the most influencial tutor of Pieter Paul Rubens. In his later years he produced emblem books, his first being Q. Horatii Flacci emblemata. His designs were mostly engraved by his younger brother Gysbrecht.
