Masculine Mangam Agrarian Mask - MAM/KANTANA - Nigeria
We can note on this piece all the graphical beauty of the Mama style.
Magnificent and elegant crest mask in hard and heavy wood. Crusty, slightly red, earth-based patina.
It was initially part of a masculine/feminine pair.
The lines are delicate and refined, visually very impactful.
Symbolically, the horns come together, forming a circle and marking the accomplishment of a renewed cycle.
Within the Mama ethnic group, horns symbolise fertility, which can either be associated to the fertility of the soil or to the one of women and wives.
These kinds of masks are generally used by a group of men within the Mama village, with the social responsibility of the development of the village or of its agricultural production.
Hence, these are the guardians of the prosperity of the village.
The ceremonies during which the masks are used are named Mangam.
