Pipes made of wood, cast brass, clay or bovine bones are made with great stylistic variety.
Pipes incorporating human figures, animals and complex geometric patterns used to highlight the high status of their owners, while common men and women used to smoke small undecorated wooden or terracotta pipes.
Kings and members of royal families owned pipes with stems so long that servants and attendants were nominated to light them and to handle the hole under the bowl which regulates the air flow.
Superb patina of age.
Private collection.
