Impressive, large(!), decorative original mask. Accents is white paint, nice cowry shells.
Eye lag (screw) for hanging the mask in the back. See photo, below top, in the middle.
The Bamoun or Bamum people are situated in the North West of Cameroun. From the (European) middle ages until the 19th century there existed a Kingdom of Bamum. It was turned into a German colony in 1884 and after WWI changed hands and became French territory.
Provenance: collected by Dr. J. Willink, researcher, associated with the African Studies Centre in Leiden, and author of many works on Africa and African art. Dr. Willink purchased at auctions and from dealers mainly in Europe.
