The contemporary records of the Dutch East India Company, the V.O.C., include a great deal of information about the so-called Nanking Cargo. The wreck of the Geldermalsen has been referred to as the Nanking Cargo ever since the original auction that took place in April and May 1986. The reason for this appellation was that in the eighteenth century, Blue and White Chinese porcelain of the 1760s was advertised either as Nanking or Nankeen China.
The Geldermalsen, built in 1746, was one of the newest and finest of the Dutch East Indiamen. She measured 150 feet long and 42 feet wide. Captain Jan Morel, aged thirty-three, and his large crew of Dutch sailors, along with sixteen Englishmen, set sail for Holland from Canton. However disaster struck and on Monday 3 January 1752 the Geldermalsen hit a reef and sank.
