With folding frontispiece ('Goenoeng Lamongan'] and lithographed title page in part I, and 51 (of 53 original) folding maps, views, tables and plates, (iv),671; 570; 571-1192,(2); 1195-1432,(2),498, viii, xii, viii pp. Half-cloth, 25 × 17 cm.

Condition: fair, taking into account that an undamaged set is almost impossible to find. Solidly bound, complete with the exception of 3 title pages, which is rare, a few pages tanned at the beginning and end, an occasional tear in a folding map, some library stamps in front, title page and frontispiece of part 1 are loose and severely worn. Library labels on spines.

Very readable primary source on expeditions to volcanoes. Detailed descriptions of country and people. First comprehensive report of the heavy eruption of the Tambora volcano in 1815, heavier than the Krakatau which only erupted in 1883.
