Impressive oil on canvas attributed to the distinguished Genoese Baroque painter Bernardo Strozzi (1581-1644), depicting Saint Lucia.
He was born in Genoa around 1581. In 1598, at the age of seventeen, he entered a Capuchin monastery. When his father died around 1608, he abandoned the order to care for his mother, earning his living painting pictures that were often influenced by Franciscan teachings, for example his Adoración de pastores (h. 1615; Walters Museum of Baltimore).
In 1625, he was accused of illegally practicing painting. When his mother died. Bernardo was pressured by the Cappuccinos' order in court to return to the order. He suffered a short prison time in Genoa, and when he was released he fled to Venice to avoid being confined to a monastery in 1631. Throughout his life he wore the nickname of Il prete Genovese (the Genoese priest).
His early paintings, such as the Éxtasis de san Francisco show the dark emotions of a Caravaggio. But by the second decade of the 17th century, while working in Venice, Strozzi had synthesized a personal style that merged northern pictorial influences (including Rubens and the Veronés). It is also very likely that he was influenced by Velázquez.
After a commission to portray Claudio Monteverdi his fame grew.
