Beautiful and in mint condition piece by Pieter Alardus Haaxman (1814-1887).

Haaxman was born in 1814 as the son of the clerk of investigation of the urban taxes in Delft Cornelis Haaxman and Maria Bolland. Haaxman was educated by the Delft art teacher Cornelis Ouboter van der Grient and the painter Cornelis Kruseman. Just like his Delftse teacher, Haaxman was a teacher at the Delft City drawing school. He subsequently became a teacher at Hogereburgerschool and the burgeravondschool there. He was Secretary at the drawing society "Tandem fit surculus arbor". As a painter he made genre scenes, beach views, portraits, figures and scenes from history. He was teacher of Adolf Mangold. Haaxman's work is found in the national museum in Amsterdam (see image).

Haaxman married Anna Elisabeth Margaretha Ilcken, daughter of a Delft gold and silversmith, on 15 July 1840 in Delft. This marriage resulted in six children, including the journalist Pieter Anne Haaxman. His cousin Pieter (1854-1937), son of his brother Andries Jacobus, was an artist in The Hague.

Haaxman died in December 1887 at the age of 73 in his home town Delft.
