Book, Ukiyoe taisei: Collection of Ukiyoe images - hard cover - 'Ukiyoe taisei', Vol. 10 - Japan - 1930
Ukiyo-e (浮世絵 'images of of the floating world') is a genre of Japanese art printing on paper embossed with wooden plates which flourished in the Edo period, between the 17th and 20th centuries. This art technique became very popular in Edo (Tokyo) during the late 17th century. In the 18th century, Suzuki Harunobu developed the polychromatic print technique. In its orgins, the primary subject of ukiyo-e was city life, and in particular beautiful courtesans, large sumo wrestlers, and famous actors. Following this, landscapes also became popular, while political subjects and those of lower social classes (than that consisting of the courtesans, sumo wrestlers, and actors) never appeared.
The volume is of a Chinese work from 1930 - the tenth volume of a very extensive series illustrating the art of Ukiyo to the Chinese via a great number of reproductions in colour and in black and white. The volume consists of over 200 high-quality illustrations.
