RARE old ring, Barava bokolo pre-contact also called Kuwojo. Made of fossilized giant clam shell conferring this particular colour (Tridacna gigas) polished and with openwork. Beautiful old patina. Old customary exchange currency or tribal chief property title from Southern Choiseul Island, Solomon Islands. In its original unrestored condition.
Size including stand: 38 x 14 x 1.5 cm - Size without stand: 25 x 14 x 1.5 cm. 1.2 kg.
Rare design, rarely seen in collections, it became logo of the central bank of the Solomon Islands because of its strong symbolism. It consists of a ring topped with a stylized figure representing a pigeon with an endemic bluish crest and with the Choiseul Island emblem located in the northwest of the archipelago.
Collected on site by a New Caledonian skipper in the 1960s and then kept in a private collection in Nouméa.
Sold with a custom made stand.
