1934 THE DALI CASE....
Dali almost got excluded from the surreal group because of this painting L’Enigme de Guillaume Tell, depicting Lenin with a soft butt and also for having made reactionary remarks.
Summoned by the group, Dali arrived sick with a thermometer in his mouth.
While Breton raised the indictment, Dali started undressing to, so he says, drop his fever. Then he replied to the accusations. According to him, his fascination with Hitler has nothing political to it. Simply put, “the floppiness of this Hitler’s flesh compressed under the military outfit” provokes in Dali “a gustative milky nutritious and Wagnerian ecstasy”. As for his canvas depicting Lenin’s bare ass, it came to him in a dream. Isn’t dream one of the creative engine of surreal creativity? Then, speaking directly to Breton, known for his homosexual intolerance: “If tonight, André Breton, I dream that I fuck you in the ass, tomorrow, I would paint us in our best sex positions, with a great lush of details”
Finally, he claims that Hitler is the worthy successor of Sade and Lautréamont, a brilliant director of abomination. Infuriated, Breton voted to exclude Dali. Shirtless, Dali throws himself at his feet, promising without laughter that he has “ nothing against the proletariat”.
This acrobatic art speech (but also Dali’s growing notoriety, which surrealism movement needed) convinced the jurors to reject Dali’s exclusion.
Salvador Dali, is unanimously recognized as the greatest surreal artist, one of the greatest artists of the 20th century and definitively the most charismatic. The artwork on sale is part of a collection, in addition to the most famous paintings of the artist, of rarities which are not very often or even never exhibited. The collection consists mainly of paintings and lesser-known drawings from many periods of one of the most prolific artist of our time.
All these works are not always the most ‘beautiful’ in the aesthetic sense of the word, even though beauty is permanent in Dali’s work. They are all interesting, very exciting, each one is representing a part of the journey of this artist who has an overflowing, abundant, delusional imagination. These are all testimonies of the history of this genuine creative genius.
To be discovered. With rare exceptions, I only own one copy of each.
