This refined large-sized ceremonial fork from Fiji Islands is in very good conditions and shows a superb deep patina. It has four unusually thin teeth and a balustrade-shaped handle which ends in a button-like fin. It is carved from a single piece of wood.

 These forks are often called “cannibal’s forks” as they were used by priests and chiefs to eat human flesh. However, they were also used by high-ranking individuals who couldn’t touch food with their hands as they were considered living representations of deities. Assistants would carefully feed these people with consecrated meat and indeed any other food (including human flesh).
